Are you a runner?

26 Oct

How do you know you are a runner?

I run as far as I can, then slow to a walk to catch my breath, and then pick up the pace again, but I always give it my best shot.  Being a runner (am I really a runner?) there is no pretending.  Even though I imagine myself gliding gracefully across the landscape, the reality is that I’m always plodding along, struggling up the hills, and looking forward to the post-race snacks!

Yes, there are those runners that talk about pace, splits, long runs, track practice, and fartleks, but I’ve found they also chime in when there is a discussion about pizza and dessert, new homes, babies, and beer. (They are runners, but am I?)

The small victories along the way are the most sweet and should be celebrated as loudly as the big ones. The first mile you run without stopping, your first 5-K, your first triathlon…always find a new goal and set out to achieve it.

That’s what’s so great about the running. You can do it solo and enjoy your favorite music or get lost in your thoughts. I also enjoy running and training with a supportive group.  It’s not about how fast you are or how far you go, just that you’ve gotten up to spend the morning with a great group of people who have a similar goal.

Believe me, there is no better feeling than seeing the ENTIRE team standing at the finish line cheering for ME as I cross it!  Run strong!
